As part of the project, an educational DVD on the topic of children’s rights in Namibia will be produced. This DVD focuses on the availability of education to children with disabilities. The film shows the story of a young Namibian girl in a wheelchair, who has to deal with the loss of her parents and difficulties at a new school, where she is being bullied because of her disability.
Ambassador Hückmann emphasized that „in keeping with its international obligations as a member of the EU and the United Nations, Germany has made the protection of children’s rights one of its main policy focuses. All children- especially children with disabilities- must have access to education. We therefore support the production of this educational DVD to create awareness among Namibians about their problems.”
“My Best Interest” is the fourth educational DVD produced by OYO on children’s rights. To date, three episodes have been produced: “Left Alone”, looking at child-headed households, “Stinky Boy”, looking at child abuse and “Why Can’t I Be Like Everybody Else”, looking at children discriminated against based on their sexual orientation. All DVD’s have been extremely well received in schools and until now over 32 000 people have seen the films.
Rehearsals will take place in August. The episode will be shot in October for a launch in December, to coincide with the celebration of the International Human Rights Day.
